Sensex steady, rises just 4.9 points

According to dealers, software shares were sidelined while hectic activity was witnessed at counters like TELCO, Apollo Tyres, Siemens, L&T and Hindalco.

Reflecting the steady trend, the 30-share BSE Sensitive Index opened at 4332.84 points, touched the day's high of 4355.67 points, reached a low of 4309.57 and closed at 4326.41 points, showing a marginal gain of 4.90 points from the previous close of 4321.51 points.

The broad-based BSE-100 index, however, dropped 02.02 points to 1870.21 points as against the previous close of 1872.23 points.

Petrochemicals giant Reliance Industries Limited's quarterly results failed to boost its share price on the BSE. The scrip closed lower by Rs 4.15 at Rs 180.60 (previous: Rs 184.75). In all 7,999,000 RIL shares changed hands at the BSE today. The volume at the NSE was higher, where 12,189,000 shares of RIL changed hands.

Dealers said the pharmaceutical and fast-moving consumer goods counters witnessed a mixed trend. Institutionalised deals were reported at the counters led by Bharat Electronics, Hero Honda, ICICI, MICO, Satyam Computers and TVS Suzuki.

Commenting on the steady movement, an analyst at a city-based broking firm said it was observed that some of the small scrips have started catching the attention of market players.

The BSE-200 and Dollex indices moved down 0.64 and 0.51 points to 427.42 and 164.12 points, respectively.

Total turnover on the BOLT system came down sharply to Rs 15.58 billion as against yesterday's Rs 19.46 billion.

Larsen & Toubro topped the list by registering a turnover of Rs 1.86 billion, followed by Reliance (Rs 1.46 billion), State Bank of India (Rs 1.24 billion), Satyam Computers (Rs 1.08 billion) and TELCO (Rs 1.02 billion).

Other actively traded counters were Pentafour Software (Rs 993.5 Million), ITC (Rs 713.1 million), ACC (Rs 541.5 million), Ranbaxy Laboratories (Rs 470.7 million), TISCO (Rs 347.9 million), Hindalco (Rs 287.1 million), Zee Telefilm (Rs 284.8 million), Grasim (Rs 259.3 million), Sterlite (Rs 218.9 million) and Siemens (Rs 196.1 million).
