Gujarat bundled out Assam for 180, but were themselves in trouble at 32 for two on the opening day of their four-day Ranji Trophy tie at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati today.

Assam elected to bat after winning the toss, but lost early wickets when opener Parag Das fell leg before to a Lalit Patel delivery with the home team's total reading 16.

Gujarat's bowlers then struck at regular intervals with Assam's Kiran Pawar and Zakaria Zaffri also falling cheaply.

At lunch, the score read 89 for three with Subhajit Saikia on 48 and V Sarbanand on 12 struggling to take the score forward.

Gujarat's bowlers kept up the pressure in the post-lunch session, getting the wicket of Saikia, who played some splendid shots to score 56 with five boundaries.

Sarbanand then took charge to emerge the highest run-scorer with 58, compiled with the help of 10 fours.

Hitesh Mazumdar was the most successful bowler for the visitors, claiming five wickets while giving away 47 runs. Lalit Patel and Bhawin Mehta took two wickets each.

Assam's bowlers also began on an aggressive note, hardly giving any chance to the visitors to settle down with Gautam Datta claiming two early wickets, those of opener Nilesh Modi and Luv Pawar.

The other opener, Aaakash Christian, was batting on 15 while Siddhartha Trivedi was on two at draw of stumps.
