EC notification to President will mention party name for the first timeFor the first time, in the Election Commission's notification to the President, constituting the 13th Lok Sabha after the completion of the general election, the party affiliation will also be mentioned against the name of the elected candidates. This new procedure will satisfy the requirements of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution with particular reference to anti-defection laws, official sources said today. The earlier practice was to mention only the name of the winning candidate and the constituency in the notification sent to the President. The Tenth Schedule relates to the provisions for disqualification of members of Parliament and state legislatures on ground of defection. This assumes significance in the light of the poll surveys projecting a particular party or combination of parties as the largest single group which could stake claim to form the next government. Sources, however, clarified that it was left to the parties or combination of parties to approach the President on the basis of their respective strengths in the newly-constituted house to stake a claim to form the government.
