The Srinagar police on Friday arrested Javed Ahmed Mir, acting chairman of the Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front, as he tried to take out an anti-election rally in the state capital.
Police said he was detained along with his supporters in Zainakadal locality as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, militants continued their offensive against political workers, gunning down Azad Ahmed Khan, a National Conference activist, in Khanyar, one of the eight constituencies in Srinagar district, on Thursday night.
Khan was returning home after attending an election meeting in the constituency.
