Four army personnel and two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in a gun battle in Kreeri area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir on Tuesday evening.
Five soldiers were also injured, official sources said on Wednesday.
The encounter occurred when an army column surrounded Wagoora village following information about the presence of militants there.
The militants opened fire and lobbed grenades on the troops. The troops retaliated resulting in the casualties.
The deceased militants were identified as Altaf Hussain alias Jehangir and Mohammed Yousuf alias Haris. Some arms and ammunition were seized during the operation, which was continuing when reports last came in.
Meanwhile, a gun battle between militants and security forces also broke out at Halan-Manzgam village in Anantnag district.
The encounter took place during a search operation, the sources said.
The bullet-riddled body of one Bagnu Khan was recovered from his village at Baramulla, sources said, adding he was abducted and killed for being an informer.
Militants also intruded into the houses of Farooq Ahmad Lone at Chungimullah and Ghulam Mohiuddin at Pothushahi in Kupwara district and shot them dead.
