With just two days left for the third phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir, militants on Sunday attacked a police party conducting security checks before a National Conference rally killing one person and injuring 13, including a police officer and four constables, in Pulwama district.
Militants lobbed a grenade on a police vehicle in the crowded Tral bus stand area around 1300 hours and followed it by firing on the security personnel, police said.
The policemen retaliated and, in the exchange of fire, a civilian Mohammad Abu Wani was killed.
Among the injured are the Station House Officer of Tral, Asi Abdul Ahad, and constables Mohammad Maqbool, Mohammad Shafi, Ali Mohammad and Darbari Singh.
No militant group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
