Bid to blow up polling stations in Anantnag foiled

Election 2002 Security forces foiled an attempt by militants to blow up two designated polling stations in Anantnag district with the timely detection of improvised explosive devices on the eve of the third phase of the assembly election in Jammu & Kashmir.

Official sources said an IED was detected at a polling booth at Narpora in Kokernag area at about 0940 IST on Monday. Experts defused the device. They also neutralized another similar device at Larimarg-Yaripora.

The detection of the two IEDs has frustrated the designs of militants to trigger explosions and create a fear psychosis that would keep voters away, officials said.

Meanwhile, militants opened fire on security forces manning a polling booth at Satoora in Tral area of Pulwama district around 0945 IST. The security forces retaliated, but no injuries were reported on either side.

Militants also attacked a polling station at Pampore in Pulwama district, injuring four persons, including a polling official and a security personnel.
