At least 20 people were injured when Samata Party supporters allegedly fired at villagers during campaigning for the February 26 assembly polls by a Congress candidate at a village in Mokochung district in Nagaland, official sources said in Kohima on Saturday.

The trouble broke out on Friday after Samata Party supporters began stoning villagers of Waromung and then opened fire after the departure of Youth Congress workers from nearby Changki village, from where Industries and Commerce Minister and Congress candidate I Imkong hails, the sources said.

Some were seriously injured in the firing, the sources said adding 9mm bullets recovered from the spot by Congress workers were handed over to the administration.

Earlier on Tuesday, 30 persons were injured in clashes between supporters of the Congress and Nagaland Peoples Front at Khar village in the same district, the sources said adding 10 government employees were arrested in this connection from the village, of which NPF secretary general Chubatemjen Ao is a native.

The Indian Reserve Battalion was deployed in Jangpetkong assembly constituency, under which the two villages fall, since campaigning began because of the close proximity of the Dishoi valley on the Assam-Nagaland border where the NSCN (I-M) is active.
