It must be a great drive from Mumbai to Goa if you own a Merc like the boys in Dil Chahta Hai.

But in a Paulo Travels bus which involves 12 to 14 hours of hurtling through the darkness... nah!

Now, a journey to match the destination -- that's how I would describe a trip from Mumbai to Goa by train.

You don't have to reach Goa to start your holiday.

You can start right here in Mumbai, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (the old VT)! Or at Dadar railway station, like I did.

The Konkan Railway winds through the same terrain as National Highway 17, down the Konkan coast.

Since the Sahayadri range hugs this coast -- leaving little space for any kind of coastal plain -- it must have been a real challenge to build this line.

The Konkan Railway is also one of India's newest railway lines to connect Mumbai to Mangalore. However we will now travel just halfway down the line, to Goa.
