Law ministry bars Hindujas from Air-India bid

The Law ministry formally disqualified on Friday the billionaire Hinduja brothers from taking part in the bidding for state-run Air-India and Indian Airlines, a top official told Reuters.

"They are out. We've gone through the case carefully and they don't qualify under the guidelines," the official who did not wish to be identified told Reuters.

But the India-based spokesman for the British-based Hindujas said that they had withdrawn from the bidding for both airlines on Friday as "the Department of Divestment is determined to find reasons to disqualify the consortium".

The Hindujas' bid was led by Madras-based bus and truck-maker Ashok Leyland.

Singapore Airlines and India's Tata group comprise the only consortium left in the bidding for a 40-per cent stake in Air India. But an Indian government source said on Friday that Singapore Airlines was looking to pull out of the bidding, jeopardising the sale of the money-losing carrier.
