Maruti sell-off talks may start next week

The government will start negotiations with Suzuki on the divestment of its stake in Maruti Udyog after deciding the strategic partners for Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd and IBP.

The scheduled meeting of the two partners for January 28 was put off in view of the divestment ministry officials' pre-occupation with the closing of the price bids for VSNL and IBP, official sources said on Friday.

"The privatisation of VSNL and IBP is taking up all the time. The negotiations with Suzuki would start a few days after February 5 when the Cabinet Committee on Divestment will meet to take a decision on the strategic partner for IBP and VSNL," they added.

The valuers appointed by the government had given their report to the divestment ministry last month. The two partners would now decide on the valuation before announcing a rights issue of Rs 4 billion as part of the divestment process.
