Govt to divest in 13 more PSUs this year

The government of India has identified 13 more PSUs for divestment during 2002-03 as part of its programme to accelerate the process of reforms, additional secretary to the prime minister, Prodipto Ghosh said on Wednesday.

Participating in the CII's Partnership Summit 2002 plenary session on The role of the government: Needed - a facilitator - not a headmaster" in Bangalore, he said, the government could privatise only two units during 2000-01 due to various bottlenecks that surfaced.

He said any decision on divestment to be accomplished needed transparency, accountability and fairness. The government had learnt lessons from the past experiences.

Ghosh outlined the initiatives being taken by the government to speed up reforms, including setting up of several committees.

Ghosh, who refused to offer reactions on downsizing of the government, be it at the Centre or state, however, said the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs was looking into the report of the committee on pruning expenditure and its specific recommendations would be given effect to.

India, he said had a well drafted reforms agenda adopting two-pronged strategy -- institutional design to ensure that policy reforms stay on course and initiatives for regulatory reforms at all levels including local governments.

Ghosh said a four-stage process was underway to address the issue of regulatory reforms for investment in projects.
