India wins WTO steel ruling against US

India on Friday won a major ruling in its favour with the WTO Dispute Settlement body pronouncing that the US should bring anti-dumping duty on the Steel Authority of India Ltd's product in conformity with the anti-dumping agreement of the World Trade Organisation.

The US government had imposed a high anti-dumping duty on the import of cut-to-length plates from SAIL in 1999.

The WTO panel has concluded that the US had acted inconsistently with the anti-dumping agreement by refusing to take into account the sale price of SAIL plates in the US.

''With this WTO recommendation, it is expected that the US would rework and reduce the anti-dumping duty imposed on SAIL plates'', the company said in a statement in New Delhi.

Before the imposition of the anti-dumping duty, SAIL had established itself as a leading CTL plate supplier in the US and the world.

Since it had exported steel plates at prices even higher than the ruling prices in the US market, the matter was taken with the WTO.
