Revenue secretary may be shifted before Budget preparation

Ailing revenue secretary Ajai Vikram Singh is likely to be shifted from the high-profile department well ahead of the Budget preparation expected to start in a couple of weeks.

Singh, stated to be suffering from high blood pressure, was hospitalised for about a week last month after he complained of exhaustion during a meeting held in Finance Minister Jaswant Singh's office.

Official sources said a decision on his shifting would be taken after the return of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from his tour to Copenhagen, Denmark.

Doctors have advised him rest and it is expected that Singh would be shifted to a lighter portfolio to facilitate his recuperation, the sources said.

Expenditure secretary C S Rao, who was given additional charge of revenue during Singh's hospitalisation, is tipped to succeed him as the revenue secretary. It is not yet clear who would succeed Rao.
