Fernandes reiterates review of divestmentDefence Minister George Fernandes on Tuesday reiterated that divestments, initiated by the NDA government, should be reviewed. "Since the government has completed half of its term, a review was necessary," he said, adding, "in the Five Year Plan also a mid-term review is done to assess the progress and implementation of polices." Hence, divestments' review was also a must, Fernandes told reporters during an informal chat at Sevagram in Wardha on the sidelines of National Convention of Khadi Commission. He said the Samata Party was not opposing divestment, but favoured a review. He declined to comment on the Labour Commission report submitted by Justice Varma saying, "I am part of the government and would not like to comment on that." Earlier, speaking at the National Convention of Khadi Commission, Fernandes said the Khadi and Village Industries Commission should generate employment opportunities for the unemployed youth in the country. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government had promised to provide employment to 5 crore (50 million) people and KVIC can play an important role in this area. Giving statistics, the Samata Party president said there were about 12-15 crore (120-150 million) unemployed people all over the country, including 4.23 crore (42.3 million) registered with the employment exchanges across India.
