A day after West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi stepped in with a suggestion for a neutral mediator to resolve the Singur deadlock, Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee had a one-hour closed door meeting with him on Monday.

It was not immediately known if Chatterjee, who is leader of the Opposition, handed over any letter to the Governor from Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, whose indefinite dharna at Singur, demanding return of 400 acres to 'unwilling' farmers there, entered the ninth day.

The Governor wrote to Banerjee, asking her to call off the dharna and hold a discussion with the state government.

"(Let) a person with no political or industrial affiliation be invited to act as an unbiased intermediator in the matter. He or she can go into the demand articulated by you and give carefully thought-out findings for the earnest consideration of all sides," the Governor, in his letter, said.

"If this thought is acceptable to you, please suggest a name or names. I would request the state government to respond positively."
