JD, SP fight over seats

The prospect of seat adjustments between the Janata Dal and the Samajwadi Party in Rajasthan diminished on Thursday, with the two United Front partners coming out with separate lists of candidates for more than half of the 25 seats in the state.

While the JD announced 12 candidates, the SP categorically stated that it would contest in 17 Lok Sabha seats.

JD state president Arjun Detha and his SP counterpart Kailash Meena announced their party nominees in separate press conferences.

Detha said that retired IAS officer Chandra Prakash Meena would contest the Jhalawar seat, while former MP Ram Kanwar Bairwas was being fielded from the Tonk (SC) Parliamentary constituency.

Balram Verma would contest the Bikaner seat and retired Rajasthan administrative services officer Mangi Lal Mosalpuria would have the Jalaur (SC) seat, he added. Ramesh Garg Pali also figures in the list.

Detha, however, said efforts were on to reach an understanding with the UF in some of the remaining constituencies for which lists have not been finalised.

The JD had earlier announced a list of seven candidates. The party has decided to leave one seat each (ST) for the Communist Party of India (Salumber) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (Sikar).

Besides this, the JD has extended support to secular Congress candidate and Union Minister of State Sheesh Ram Ola in the Jhunjhunu constituency.

Meena, while stating the SP would contest 17 seats, said his party was willing to leave the rest to other UF partners.
