Counting of votes to begin on March 2
Counting of votes in the entire country, except three parliamentary constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir and two in Meghalaya, will now commence on March 2, and the first results are expected by the next day, the Election Commission announced today.
Deputy Election Commissioner Subhash Pani told the media that a decision to advance the counting date from March 8 to
March 2 was taken at a full meeting of the Commission after taking
into consideration all relevant factors, various inputs and in view
of the demand for the same by a host of political parties.
The Commission also changed the polling date in Nagaland and Mizoram from February 22 to February 23 following a host of representations from the two North-Eastern states. February 22 is a Sunday and the states are predominantly Christian.
Asked why March 2, Monday, has been selected for commencement of counting, Pani said polling in the rest of the country would be over on February 28 and at least a day was required for starting the counting.
Notifications for the Lok Sabha election in Mizoram and
Nagaland will be issued on January 28. A separate notification
will be issued the same day for election to the 60-member Nagaland
assembly.
Filing of nomination papers in the two states will commence on
January 28 and will be allowed till February 4. Scrutiny
will be taken up the next day. February 7 is the last date for
withdrawal of candidature.
