Talks with NTR-TDP break down, BJP to go it aloneThe Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to contest all the 42 seats from Andhra Pradesh, where it failed to clinch an electoral alliance with Lakshmi Sivaparvathi's N T Rama Rao-Telugu Desam Party. The party, which has already announced candidates for 31 seats, has released the list of candidates for the remaining 11 seats from the state. The electoral alliance with the NTR-TDP was announced early this month at a media conference, addressed by BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee and NTR's widow Parvathi in Hyderabad. However, the talks between the two parties broke down, when the NTR-TDP leaders, who were demanding a lion's share of the seats, decided to go to the poll without the BJP. One of the major reasons for the failure of the talks was that Parvathi demanded a representation in the Union Cabinet in case the BJP was voted to power. UNI |
