Reject Gujral's nomination from Punjab: Shanti Bhushan
Former Union law minister Shanti Bhushan today urged the Election Commission to reject Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral's nomination from any constituency in Punjab.
This is necessary, said Bhushan, as Gujral waived off a Rs 21.14 billion loan to the state in November in an attempt to woo voters in the event of an election.
In a letter to the EC, Bhushan, who has announced that he will contest against Gujral, said this was tantamount to 'bribing' voters before filing his nomination papers.
On November 21 after the Congress demanded
the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham ministers's ouster from the United Front ministry, Gujral waived off the loan to Punjab.
"It is crystal clear the generosity stemmed from Gujral's desire to contest from the state," Bhushan said.
''The EC must frown upon such tactics on the part of candidates,
occupying positions of power. It must prevent them from polluting
the election process by directing the rejection of Gujral's
nomination from any Punjab constituency,'' the former Union minister
said.
Bhushan said the Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party combine decided to support Gujral from Jalandhar as he had waived off the loan.
