K C Pant quits Congress, to back BJP

Former Union minister K C Pant today resigned from the Congress and decided to support the Bharatiya Janata Party in the general election.

Pant, who was a Cabinet minister in both the Indira and Rajiv Gandhi governments, said since the BJP and its allies alone could provide the much-needed stability after the current election, he has decided to leave the Congress.

Describing as ''painful'' his decision to disassociate from the Congress, Pant said he had no other option as his wife Ila was now the BJP candidate from the Nainital Lok Sabha constituency.

''Now that my wife has chosen to enter the fray, it would be dishonest of me to feign indifference. I would like to extend my unqualified support to her and to be free to call on my friends and the voters to do the same'' the former Union minister said in New Delhi.
