Probe ordered into 'raid' on Ali Mian's house as Mulayam blasts BJP

The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered an inquiry into the reported incident of some unidentified persons entering and conducting an unauthorised search of the Rae Bareli residence of Ali Mian, the president of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, on Monday.

The inquiry will be conducted by K V Nair, the additional director general of police (law and order).

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, who has taken a serious view of the incident, said some people were conspiring to defame his government and trying to disturb the atmosphere of mutual goodwill and harmony.

In a statement, Singh asserted that his government would deal sternly with such elements.

Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav also criticised the alleged raid on Ali Mian's house, and termed it the conspiracy of the central government on the eve of assembly polls in three major states.

Yadav said the Bhartiya Janata Party wanted to make some last-minute gains in the assembly polls by spreading communal disharmony.

The BJP very well knew it could trigger off riots but the electoral gains for them were all that mattered, he said.

Yadav, who spoke to Ali Mian over the phone, said he could not specify the government agency which conducted the raid but it was amply clear that it was done with an obvious idea of inflicting insult on the Muslim cleric.

In Rae Bareli, Superintendent of Police Rajiv Ranjan Verma categorically denied any raid had been made on Ali Mian's house in his native village of Taqiya under Kotwali police station.
