Operation 'clean-up' at Kathmandu airport

E-Mail this report to a friend

Deepak Goel in Kathmandu

After admitting the 'possibility of a security lapse' at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport prior to the departure of the Indian Airlines flight IC-814 to Delhi, which was later hijacked over Lucknow, authorities here have begun cleaning up their act.

Nepal's tourism and civil aviation minister today ordered closure of all shops contracted for business on the TIA premises. These include the forex outlet, the duty-free shop, a restaurant and some retail outlets for food and beverages in the departure lounge.

The ministry would make alternate arrangements for operating the restaurant through a government agency.

These steps are being taken in view of reports that unauthorised people had easy access to restricted areas within the sprawling TIA complex which is currently undergoing renovations.
