E-Mail this report to a friend

An estimated 12 to 15 per cent of the 4.3 million voters exercised their franchise, amid tight security, during the first three hours of polling in the four Lok Sabha constituencies of Bihar where elections were deferred because of floods.

According to reports received in Patna, 15 per cent polling was recorded in Bhagalpur and Purnia, 13 per cent in Rajmahal and 12 per cent in Khagaria.

Long queues were seen outside the booths in the rural areas of Bhagalpur and Purnia.

In the hilly areas of Rajmahal, women outnumbered men in many booths. However, the pace of polling was slow in Khagaria and Rajmahal during the early hours.

According to Inspector General of Police (operations) M K Sinha, polling was incident-free in all the four constituencies.

In all, 24 companies of paramilitary forces and 50 companies of the Bihar Military Police, besides the state police, armed with shoot-at- sight orders, were guarding polling stations to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling.
