Most telephone lines in Bhuj restored

Most telephone lines in earthquake-ravaged Bhuj have now been restored with 100 per cent calls being passed on to places like Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Delhi, Bombay and Madras.

Chief General Manager (Western Zone) H B Mehta, who successfully led the telecom team in Orissa during the super-cyclone, is camping in Bhuj, leading a high-powered 600 member team.

"There is an unexpected improvement in telecom services in Bhuj and surrounding areas in a record time," Mehta told PTI.

The team from outside also include experts like M K Seth, Director, Telecom, Sikkim, who has had experience in handling similar crises.

"Real dedication of the staff and a well-defined direction have brought these results," Mehta said.

He said out of the 147 exchanges in Bhuj, 133 have been restored.

"We also have a sad news, as one of the VSNL employees lost his life while restoring the exchange in Bachchau village Tuesday night," he said.
