Lok Sabha to discuss Gujarat earthquake on Tuesday

The Lok Sabha will take up on Tuesday a discussion on the Gujarat earthquake that claimed thousands of lives. The discussion would be taken up immediately after Question Hour.

This was decided at an all-party meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi soon after both Houses adjourned following the President's address to the joint sitting, Parliament sources said.

The meeting was attended among others by Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Leader of Opposition Sonia Gandhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan and representatives of the TDP, CPI-M, RJD, BSP, NCP, AIADMK, INLD, Forward Bloc and IUML.

The discussion will follow a statement by the government.

The Speaker also sought co-operation of the parties for smooth running of the House in view of important financial and legislative business to be transacted during the session.

In his opening remarks, Balayogi said the Lok Sabha will have 137 hours to conduct financial and legislative business, including passing of the Railway and General budget.

Besides the Financial Bill 2001, the House may also take up for discussion some matters of urgent public importance, he said.

The three-month budget session, which began on Monday, is scheduled to conclude on May 11. There will be 41 sittings in all, Balayogi said adding there will be a three-week recess from March 24 to enable Standing Committees to consider demands for grants of various ministries.
