Labourers, pigeons return to Gujarat

Pigeons who missed their share - grains thrown by humans - for many days in the wake of the killer earthquake, have started flocking city squares once again to pick their feed, even as Gujarat continued its endeavour to resurrect itself from the disaster.

A large number of labourers who had fled the city and many parts of the state after the quake, have started coming back to pick up the threads of their lives, just as those who remained rooted here are trying to push the 'Black Friday' into oblivion.

The diamond and hotel industry which employs a large number of casual labour from outside the state, particularly Rajasthan and Orissa, is getting back to business with increasing number of workers who had left for their native places returning, industry sources told PTI.

Life in Ahmedabad, considered Manchester of western India, has now assumed a semblance of normalcy with roadside Dhabas and tea resuming business and witnessing a gradual increase in the customer turn-out as the sun sets on the banks of Sabarmati.
