More than 200 aftershocks in Gujarat

The Indian Meteorological Department has confirmed that more then 200 aftershocks have been recorded in Gujarat, including the one that shook the state early on Sunday morning. This tremor measured 6 on the Richter Scale.

Sources in the Crisis Management Group feel the death toll in Friday's earthquake could now go beyond the 20,000 mark. So far, more than 10,000 deaths have been reported from the state.

"These are rough estimates. We will get a clearer picture only by Monday evening when the rubble in most of the quake-hit towns and villages are partially removed," IMD official R R Kelkar told rediff.com

Meanwhile, a special relief plane carrying medical and food supplies from Muscat, Oman, arrived in Delhi on Sunday. Another plane carrying relief material from Oman will arrive in India on Monday. The supplies have been sent on the directive of Oman's Sultan Qaboos Said Al Said. The relief operations in Delhi are being coordinated by Oman's Ambassador Khalifa bin Al Harthy.

Food and medical supplies are also pouring in from Russia, Nepal, the United States, Britain. US Ambassador Richard Celeste contributed $ 25,000 -- the maximum ad hoc amount a US envoy is permitted to contribute in an emergency -- to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. The United Nations has also offered its help in relief and rehabilitation work.
