TDP will back govt stand, but ask for probe

R Prema in New Delhi

The Telugu Desam Party, a staunch ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party, will back the government on the defence deals scandal that has already claimed BJP president Bangaru Laxman.

On Wednesday morning Prime Minister A B Vajapayee called Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, soon after which TDP parliamentary party leader K Yerran Naidu and eight other MPs held a video conference with Naidu.

According to a TDP MP, Naidu repeated his stand announced yesterday: 'Support Vajpayee, and at the same time ask for an inquiry into the scandal'.

On Wednesday Vajpayee will remain absent from Paliament after 12.30 pm, since he is hosting a diplomatic lunch at Hyderabad House in the capital.

Naidu has already briefed his MPs about it, sources said.
