Defence scandal has its echo in Maharashtra assembly

Our Correspondent in Bombay

The ongoing defence deals scam echoed in the Maharashtra assembly on Wednesday, with treasury members rushing to the well of the house shouting slogans against BJP president Bangaru Laxman. Following the bedlam, the assembly was adjourned thrice, before being adjourned for the day.

Both Congress and Nationalist Congress Party members hurled slogans against the central government. Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, in a forceful voice, remarked that the NDA government had tarnished the image of the country and lowered the prestige of armed forces. He remarked, "Wah re BJP, Laxman kare baimani" (wow, the BJP's Laxman is dishonest).

Soon after BJP-Shiv Sena members started raising counter-slogans against Bhujbal and the Democratic Front government in the state.

The uproar continued, and with treasury members refusing to heed speaker Arun Gujarathi's plea to take up question hour, the house was adjourned for 20 minutes.

Prior to the adjournment, the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party combine and their allies held a close door meeting at which it was decided to rake up the issue in the assembly.

Although the house was to debate on the governor's joint address to both houses of the state legislature, indications are that the treasury benches will not let the Shiv Sena- BJP opposition off the hook.
