The government on Thursday ordered an inquiry into the reported allegations that a conspiracy to carry out the tehelka.com expose was hatched in the office of a home ministry official to "discredit and bring about the collapse of the Vajpayee government".
A spokesman of the home ministry said the government's attention had been drawn to a newspaper report that an official of the ministry was involved in the tehelka.com sting.
"An inquiry in the matter is being conducted. Based on the findings of the inquiry, appropriate action against the officer will be initiated," the spokesman said.
The report in a Delhi newspaper had claimed that it was in the office of Thomas Mathew, a director in the Union home ministry, that the tehelka.com "plot" was initially discussed with a member of the portal's investigative team and some others, leading to the operation.
Replying to questions, the spokesman clarified that Mathew had not been suspended pending inquiry.
Repeated efforts to contact Mathew for his reaction were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, tehelka.com editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal termed the newspaper report "baseless".
