LeT's top commander in Kashmir killed

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday said they had eliminated the chief commander of the Lashkar-e-tayiba Tariq Mehmood alias Salah-ud-din in a chance encounter in central Budgam district.

K Rajendra DIG (Srinagar and Budgam range) told rediff.com that the deceased was a Pakistani national and was one of the most wanted militants.

"He died in a chance encounter with the Special Operations Group near Parhoo village in central Budgam district late on Wednesday afternoon," Rajendra said.

He said the Tariq Mehmood was involved in the suicide attacks on Srinagar airport and the Police Control Room.

There is no word yet from the Lashkar on the issue.
