Suspected Qasim Nagar killers engage security forces

Militants suspected to be behind the Qasim Nagar massacre traded gunfire with security personnel leaving at least two policemen dead, police sources said in Jammu on Thursday.

The militants, who were believed to have escaped after the July 13 massacre of 29 persons, opened fire from inside the thick forest on a hill just two km from the Qasim Nagar slums at a CRPF patrol triggering the encounter, the sources said.

Army and police contingents were rushed to the encounter site to help the CRPF flush out the militants from the forest.

In the exchange of fire that followed, two policemen were killed, the sources said adding the encounter near Raika forest lasted for about an hour.

The gunbattle stopped when the ultras' weapons fell silent and they are believed to have shifted to some other place, the sources said.

Security forces were deployed in strength around the forest and combing operations were launched amidst fears that the militants might strike again, they said.

Panic gripped residents of Qasim Nagar and Rajiv Nagar slums, still recovering from the July 13 nightmare, and some of them have fled from their hutments, they said.
