Militants on Friday opened fire near the high-security MLAs' hostel in Indira Chowk in Jammu.
The shootout took place around 1700 hrs IST. As the guards on duty returned fire, the militants jumped into a drain for cover.
The army has cordoned off the area.
The number of the militants involved was not immediately known.
