Fernandes holds meeting
of Army commanders

A day after Pakistan claimed to have repulsed an Indian attack in the Drass sector, Defence Minister George Fernandes on Saturday chaired a lengthy meeting of top army commanders in Leh.

Fernandes, who flew down to Ladakh in the morning, attended a briefing of the Leh-based 14 Army Corps, which looks after the Line of Control stretching from Matayan to Point NJ 9842, Siachen Glacier and Sino-Indian border in the region.

The defence minister also visited some forward areas in the Kargil district, which have been a scene of artillery exchanges between Indian and Pakistani troops.

Fernandes was scheduled to fly to the Northern Command headquarters at Udhampur and also visit some militancy-affected areas of the adjoining Doda district later in the day.

Army Chief General S Padmanabhan, meanwhile, toured some forward areas in Kupwara, Uri, Gurez and Machil sector in the Valley.

Recent intercepts of militants' communication with their headquarters in Pakistan have indicated that they have been directed to kill candidates, political activists and strike at poll rallies.
