RSS stops short of demanding Farooq's dismissal

Tara Shankar Sahay and Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Expressing shock and anguish over the terrorist strike in Jammu, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief K S Sudarshan stopped short of seeking the dismissal of the Dr Farooq Abdullah government while lambasting it for failing to protect the people, of Jammu region in particular.

Reacting agitatedly to the ghastly incident, Sudarshan told reporters that the people of the state did not have confidence that the Dr Farooq Abdullah government could protect them.

However, when a clarification was sought, RSS spokesman Ram Madhav refused to say if this meant that Sudarshan sought dismissal of the Farooq Abdullah government.

"The RSS chief's statement is very clear on this count. You are free to draw your own inference," Madhav told rediff.com in New Delhi on Sunday.

Sudershan had also hinted that terrorists have been targetting Jammu in recent months with a view to force the people to leave the state and complete their agenda of Islamisation of Jammu and Kashmir.

Bharatiya Janata Party chief M Venkaiah Naidu left no doubt about who he believed were behind the latest massacre.

"Pakistan has not given up its dirty habit of encouraging cross-border terrorism. The Pakistani president was only indulging in dramatics (when he spoke of curbing cross-border terrorism). The latest incident is a clear indication that his mindset has not changed," Naidu said.

He indicated that the government would soon be announcing its strategy against cross-border terrorism.

The Jammu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party was among several organisations that have called for a bandh on Monday in protest against the killings.
