Migrant Immovable Property Act being extended to Jammu

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday announced his government's decision to expand the scope of the Migrant Immovable Property Act to Jammu division where people have moved away in the wake of constant shelling along the border.

The Jammu and Kashmir Migrant Immovable Property (preservation, protection and restraint on distress sales) Act of 1977 is aimed at prevention of distress sale of property, Abdullah told the state assembly.

The Act is already in force in Kashmir region and is primarily aimed at safeguarding the interests of Kashmiri Pandits.

He was replying to a discussion on a private member's bill moved by Harshdev Singh of the Panthers Party seeking amendment in the Act.
