Indian, Pak troops exchange artillery fire in Kargil

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Indian and Pakistani troops have been exchanging heavy artillery fire in the Kargil sector for the past several days.

According to an Indian army spokesman in New Delhi, Indian troops on Wednesday carried out 'retaliatory fire assaults' on Pakistani posts in Batalik, Kargil and Drass areas.

He said that the Indian firing wounded between six to eight Pakistani soldiers, besides causing considerable damage to 12 Pakistani bunkers.

In Kashmir valley, the spokesman said, heavy Pakistani shelling was reported in the Tangdhar area.

"Indian troops retaliated and damaged three Pakistani bunkers," he added.

He said the Indian army also caused extensive damage to Pakistani posts in Poonch, Rajouri and Naushera sectors in 'retaliatory firing'.
