US, UK 'strongly urge' nationals to leave India, Pak

Upping their alarm at the India-Pakistan military tensions, the United States and Britain on Wednesday advised their citizens to leave India and Pakistan.

The state department, in a revised travel warning, said the US 'strongly urges' American nationals to leave India and Pakistan.

The department had issued a mild advisory last month suggesting non-essential diplomats and their families, and other Americans leave India and Pakistan and US citizens put off their travel plans to the two South Asian countries.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said in a statement: "It remains my view that war between India and Pakistan is not inevitable and with our international partners we continue to do all we can to avert the crisis."

"However, given my duty of care towards British nationals and the continuing tensions between the two countries, I have decided to make this further change to our travel advice today," he said.

A Foreign Office statement said, "Instead of advising British nationals in those countries to consider leaving, it is now advising them that they 'should' leave."

The travel note issued by Britain on May 31 had advised its nationals to consider leaving India and Pakistan and to defer any travel to these two countries in view of the tensions between the two countries.
