Pakistan refuses to accept India's 'conditions'

Pakistan said on Thursday that it was not possible to accept India's "conditions" for resumption of bilateral talks.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the Indian government "have some conditions in mind and they want these to be met before talks could begin", Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar said. "... is it possible to accept these conditions before a dialogue?"

"In the present world situation, nobody can uphold this view," Sattar told Aaj Tak news channel in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

India had said that it was ready to resume talks if Pakistan ended support to cross-border terrorism, stopped infiltration and handed over the 20 terrorists and criminals wanted by New Delhi.

On the issue of handing over the criminals, he said there should be some base for extradition.

Stating that neither India nor Pakistan could benefit by "harbouring criminals", he said, "A basis should be laid out to see how those who have committed terrorist act or any other activity can be handed over to other countries for trial."

He said Pakistan had handed over several people to the United States and other countries because there was an agreement in this regard.
