US Defence Secretary Rumsfeld in Delhi

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday night to carry forward the Anglo-American initiative to defuse the border tension between India and Pakistan.

Rumsfeld did not speak to reporters at the airport.

However, earlier in Qatari capital of Doha enroute to India, he said tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi appeared to have levelled off and said he was travelling with some concrete proposals to de-escalate the tensions, but gave no hint as to what they were.

Rumsfeld will open his visit by a meeting with National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra followed by a meeting with Indian counterpart George Fernandes.

Rumsfeld will call on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and hold talks with Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh before leaving for Islamabad.
