India bearing brunt of build-up: Musharraf

K J M Varma in Islamabad

In yet another change of tack, Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf on Saturday said he 'could not care less' whether India de-escalated as it was bearing the brunt of the continued build-up.

"We do not want them to de-escalate. We know it is hurting them," an angry Musharraf told BBC in an interview.

According to Musharraf, New Delhi's statement that unless Islamabad showed some results it was not going to de-escalate was only for 'public consumption'.

"We are totally prepared for them and we will teach them a lesson if they cross the Line of Control (LoC). They dare not violate the LoC," he asserted.

Despite the threat of war receding because of 'diminishing of intentions', Musharraf said the situation still remained explosive and could turn worse in the event of any major terrorist strike in Kashmir or elsewhere in India.

He also suggested highest level talks with India saying it would be best for him to have a dialogue with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as lower level parleys would only end up 'sidelining the issues'
