India refutes Musharraf's 'conventional deterrence' theory

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

India on Saturday refuted Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf's latest statement that 'it was Pakistan's conventional deterrence that averted a war between the two countries, not its nuclear deterrence'.

Reacting to Musharraf's interview to the BBC, External affairs ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao said, "Over the last few years, Pakistan indulged in loose and irresponsible talk, and on a number of occasions, it had threatened the use of nuclear weapons against India."

"Given this propensity on the part of Pakistan, the only rational conclusion that could be drawn is that India's nuclear deterrence had effectively forestalled Pakistan's nuclear blackmail," she said.
