Armitage to visit India, Pakistan in August

American Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has said he plans to visit India and Pakistan in August, ahead of the elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan.

The US is focused on Pakistan's national elections and India's plans for assembly elections in J&K, which 'could have an impact on military tensions between the two countries', Armitage said in an interview to the Financial Times newspaper.

"It is very important to have free and fair elections in Kashmir," he said.

During his visit to Islamabad earlier in June, Armitage had extracted a pledge from Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to put a 'permanent' end to cross-border terrorism.
