Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar
The killing of an auto-driver on Monday triggered massive protests in downtown Srinagar.
The auto-driver, Raja, was allegedly shot dead by a Border security Force jawan at a security check-post in Saraf Kadal area.
The auto-driver was carrying school children when he was stopped at a BSF check-post.
"He was fired at by the BSF and died while being shifted to a hospital," said an eyewitness. This, however, could not be verified independently.
A senior police officer described the incident as unfortunate and said: "We are trying to find out what actually happened."
As the news of Raja's death reached the old town, hundreds of protestors came out on the streets shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
