Take action and then talk: India tells Pakistan

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

New Delhi on Monday once again made it clear that there would be no progress in Indo-Pak talks until Islamabad dealt with cross-border terrorism.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao said, "We see every need to sensitise the world community on Pakistan's involvement in cross-border terrorism, which has been directed and inflicted [at India]."

If intimidated by Pakistan, India had every right to defend itself, she said, adding that the armed forces were prepared to meet any challenge.

She said India had "evidence of Pakistan's involvement and its complicity in aiding and abetting cross-border terrorism".

Asked about Islamabad's reported move to appeal to the United Nations Security Council to prevent Indian forces from crossing into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Rao said: "It is to deflect attention from the central point that Pakistan has to deal with cross-border terrorism."

When asked about the United Kingdom's caveat to India not to cross the Line of Control, as it would not prevent terrorism [as proved in the Israel-Palestine conflict], she said, "We are in touch with the government of UK, they are aware of the situation we face and that we are fighting terror."

"Where has the situation come from? It has come from Pakistan," Rao said, adding, "India is entitled to take whatever steps it sees fit to defend itself."

"Many countries have condemned the attack on Jammu and Kashmir," she said.

When asked about Indian shelling across the LoC, the spokesperson said that the question should be directed at the Ministry of Defence.
