Fernandes cuts short visit, returns to Delhi

Defence Minister George Fernandes on Tuesday cut short his visit to border areas in Bikaner-Sri Ganganagar sector in Rajasthan and returned to Delhi, official sources said.

Fernandes, accompanied by Army Chief S Padmanabhan and Air Chief Marshal S Krishnaswamy, arrived in Bikaner on Monday night to have an on-the-spot review of the situation on the border in the wake heightened Indo-Pak tension.

He left for Delhi from Suratgarh cutting short his visit to forward border areas there, sources said. He was earlier scheduled to leave for Delhi at 1400 hrs, they added.

Earlier, Fernandes held parleys with defence personnel on the field during his stay and witnessed demonstration of firepower by the Indian army at the Mahajan firing range.
