Fernandes asks troops to be
ready to meet any challenge

Defence Minister George Fernandes on Wednesday asked the country's armed forces to be prepared to meet any challenge to combat Pak-backed cross-border terrorism.

Fernandes was addressing troops at the Siachen Glacier.

The defence minister visited Siachen Glacier before joining Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is on a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, and later went to two forward posts in the frontier district of Kupwara for an on-the-spot assessment of the operational preparedness of the army.

He also held meetings with 15th Corp Commander Lt Gen V G Patankark and General Officer Commanding 28 Division, Major General M C Nanjappa.
