Straw speaks to Jaswant, says UK disturbed over tension

During his 10-minute telephone conversation on the eve of his departure to Pakistan and India, Straw told Singh that his country was disturbed about the present tension along the Indo-Pakistan border.

Straw will on Wednesday hold wide-ranging talks with Jaswant Singh and Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

Straw, who arrives in Delhi from Islamabad on Tuesday, may also call on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Meanwhile, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi also telephoned Singh and appreciated India's restraint while dealing with the situation.

Kawaguchi condoled the May 14 terrorist attack in Kaluchak and said Tokyo has called upon Pakistan to stop cross border infiltration.

Singh told Kawaguchi that India has always exercised restraint but this should not be interpreted as its patience being interminable.

Referring to the ruthless massacre of women and children at Kaluchak, he pointed out that the government was answerable to Parliament and the people.
