Pakistan must make good its promises: PM

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee firmly told his British counterpart Tony Blair on Monday that India expects Pakistan to translate into action its promise to combat cross-border terrorism and said its patience was running out in the wake of continued attacks.

"This time we would expect any promises made by him [President Pervez Musharraf] to be translated into action and this should be verifiable on the ground," Vajpayee said when Blair rang him up after talking to the Pakistani military ruler.

"There is a national anger" because Musharraf had not translated into reality the promises he had made in his January 12 speech to stop cross-border terrorism, Vajpayee told Blair during their 15-minute conversation.

In his conversation with Musharraf, Blair said "everything must be done to reduce tension between India and Pakistan, and in particular, infiltration across the line in Kashmir had to stop", according to a spokesman of the British prime minister in London.

Official sources in Manali said that during the telephonic talk with Vajpayee, Blair fully appreciated India's concerns and said he was sending Foreign Secretary Jack Straw to the subcontinent to take stock of the situation.

Vajpayee told Blair that Straw was welcome to India. Straw is scheduled to reach Delhi on Tuesday evening from Pakistan.

Blair also expressed sympathy for those killed in the terrorist attack on May 14 in Kaluchak in Jammu & Kashmir.
